Problem:
A bank was attempting to implement an interest rate hedging strategy using a well-known software tool from a major vendor. The problem was, the outputs were making no sense and the recommendations, if used, would cost millions.  Our solution:We examined the inputs and outputs from the software tool, and understood immediately that the market had changed, but the model used by the software had not. A much simpler strategy for hedging was available and could be implemented to deal with interest-rate risk using customizable off-the-shelf software.  Benefit to Our Client:While arguing over the validity of the model underlying the convoluted software it was using, the lender was losing thousands of dollars a day. The client was able to implement an easier to use and more understandable program that met its needs and protected against risk for a much smaller investment. Client staff learned methods for interpreting market movements that gave them a more intuitive feel for the value of the hedges. |
