Using data from the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA), from several Federal agencies, and from other private sources, Dr. Cowan addressed concerns expressed by the Department of the Interior regarding the safety and soundness of the iron pipe used by most communities for carrying potable water.

Washington, DC - The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) has well-established automated litigation support (ALS) programs which encompass a wide range of professional services and products that help attorneys acquire, organize, develop, and present evidence throughout the course of litigation, from pre-filing investigation, through complaint, discovery, and trial, through post-trial briefs and the appeals process. These ALS programs are in place in the Civil Division, the Civil Rights Division, the Criminal Division, the Antitrust Division, the Environment and Natural Resources Division, the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, and the Tax Division.

Analytic Focus selected by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for Research (USPTO) on Improvement of the Patent Exam Process

San Antonio, TX - The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is implementing an ambitious program to improve and streamline the patent examination process. Technological improvements, better training, expanded hiring, and other changes by the USPTO have greatly reduced the amount of time it takes for a patent application to wend its way through the system. But some patent applications still take longer than the desired time to get to their first review and the number of applications is growing ever more rapidly. The USPTO had over 500,000 pending patent applications in 2004 and the number is increasing each year.

Washington, DC - The introduction of credit scoring by banks for small business loans may help increase small businesses' access to credit, according to a study released today by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. The report also found that relationships continue to be the dominant factor in banks' decisions to lend to small businesses.

Dr. Adrian Cowan, a professor in the Department of Finance at the UAB School of Business, will be speaking on the value of relationship banking.
